KH Wurtz One-of-a-Kind Platter No. 02, 2023

Though best known for his dinnerware, which rose to prominence after K.H. Würtz was commissioned to provide custom tableware for Noma, the Danish ceramicist Kasper Würtz also crafts sculptural, one-of-a-kind platters and vases—mesmerizing vessels with dappled, shimmering surfaces that strike a delicate balance between matte and gloss. Once a year, he sends a surprise shipment of inimitable artworks to Roman and Williams cofounders Stephen Alesch and Robin Standefer, who make them available for purchase exclusively at RW Guild. Kasper crafts each one-of-one piece entirely by hand using ancient wheel-turning and glazing techniques, and fires his works in a wood-burning kiln—a laborious, time-honored method requiring exacting patience and skill.

With the exception of two long, blue-dyed pieces of wood on the sides of the doors, all other parts of this cabinet are left undyed. The exact same dyes are used on the wood as in the fabric. The doors are created by affixing multiple angled pieces of plywood to a 3/4" thick backer. The extra thickness of these assembled doors are supported on heavy-duty hinges that have a soft close feature. The different pieces on the doors are re-purposed plywood off-cuts. Assembled together, their angles create an undulating striped surface. The doors are asymmetrically sized, with the left one narrower than the right. Brass handles have been placed to continue the asymmetry. Brass brads have been driven into every piece on the doors to add a little metallic sparkle. The finish on the Skygazer Cabinet is poly-acrylic in a
