Rare ceramic table lamp, Vallauris, France, circa 1950. The sculptural free-form base features an abstract zoomorphic silhouette, pierced in two places and finished with an ivory-white glaze enhanced by broad black stripes. Its bold graphic contrast and organic form evoke the modernist ceramics created by Georges Jouve and Roger Capron in postwar Vallauris. Artist unidentified; an old handwritten label remains underneath the base. Sold with or without the shade shown. Excellent original condition.
