Monumental Brass Swan Torchères Hotel Ritz Lisbon
A monumental pair of brass torchères, each standing 190 cm high, formerly part of the furnishings of the Hotel Ritz Lisbon, one of Portugal’s defining post-war interiors. Exceptionally slender reeded brass columns rise from substantial 30 cm sculptural avian bases to broad 35 cm uplighter bowls. The bases are particularly remarkable: four elongated swan-form supports are finely modelled with deeply incised plumage, concentrating almost all of the ornament at floor level while the rest of the structure remains remarkably severe. Opened in 1959, the Hotel Ritz brought modern architecture together with interiors of considerable decorative ambition. Its principal prestige spaces were conceived by acclaimed French decorator Henri Samuel, whose overall scheme combined an Art Deco tendency with Louis XVI references and the exceptional workmanship of Portuguese craftsmen.
