Celadon Haegeum: Inlaid Cloud-and-Crane Motif

This work is chosen by those who understand tradition as a structure capable of carrying new material without losing its original voice. “The bow draws a path through stillness, while cranes cross a celadon sky below.” Created by Kwon O-hak, Master Ceramic Artisan of Icheon , this haegeum is built around a significant material exchange. The work retains the upright structure and performative identity of the Korean instrument, yet replaces its customary bamboo soundbox with a celadon resonator. The substitution is not concealed. It is made visually central, allowing the object’s point of departure from convention to become its principal field of meaning. The composition is distinctly vertical. A narrow dark neck rises above the compact ceramic chamber, crossed at intervals by tuning elements and accompanied by the pale, almost weightless line of the bow. The celadon soundbox provides the visual centre of gravity. Its low position and concentrated volume anchor the instrument, while the neck extends upwards with the measured asymmetry characteristic of a working musical object. This contrast was necessary.
